Background

Due to the wide range of mobility in today’s world (vehicles, rail, maritime, heavy transport…) and the early stage of introducing hydrogen as a replacement for fossil fuels, the HIMUGI Project aims to develop a more efficient, safe, and sustainable propulsion system for applications in mobility and transport.

The main challenges to be addressed are:

  • Reduction of the environmental footprint of Type IV hydrogen storage tanks without compromising their performance.
  • Mitigation of hydrogen embrittlement in critical metallic components.
  • Ensuring safer and more reliable operation by identifying and preventing potential risks.

Objective

The main objective of HIMUGI is to develop a hydrogen propulsion system for mobility and transport that is more efficient, sustainable, and safe.

The development of this work will focus on three main lines of research:

1
Research on type IV tanks Investigación de tanques tipo IV

Sustainable materials

  • Tank design and calculation (liner, boss and composite shell).
  • Research on formulations of new recyclable glass resins of fossil origin.
  • Research into the processing of bio-based thermoplastics by rotational moulding.

Advanced manufacturing processes

  • Investigation of the feasibility of the AFP process.
2
Research on critical metallic components
  • Research into a new, more advanced calculation process with fluid dynamic calculations.
  • Research into an easily disassembled joint for maintenance in H2 lines.
  • Research into a new manifold with built-in cooling and optimised properties.
3
Comprehensive system safety for H2 use in mobility
  • Exhaustive validation for different casuistry to optimise the safety/investment binomial.
  • Research into the environmental phenomena and parameters that affect the operation of H2 leak detection sensors.
  • Introduction of improvements in the manufacture of pressure and temperature sensors.
